Paid for PhD places at new global research centre

STEPS Centre press release - 1 February 2007

Three PhD students have the opportunity study at the cutting edge of development, science and technology innovation with the announcement of new paid-for places by major new research hub, the STEPS Centre.

Fees, fieldwork expenses and a living allowance will be paid by the STEPS Centre for the duration of the three-year course beginning in October 2007.

And the challenge facing the students could not be more timely. In an era of unprecedented social, environmental and technological change, the world faces two vital global challenges: how to link environmental sustainability with better livelihoods and health for poor people; and how to make science and technology work to reduce poverty and increase social justice.

The STEPS Centre - based at the Institute of Development Studies and SPRU Science and Technology Policy Research at the University of Sussex in Brighton - addresses these challenges by bringing together development with science and technology studies to create opportunities for poor and marginalised people.

Applicants will develop their own research topic addressing one of more of the STEPS Centre's areas - food and agriculture; health and disease; water and sanitation – or themes – dynamics; governance; designs.

With a network of partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America the Centre will connect new theory with practical approaches to offer new thinking, generate new debate and influence new policy.

  • Applicants should be EU citizens, resident in the UK for at least three years, with a Masters degree or equivalent.
  • Closing date: 31 May 200
