'Livestock Revolution' in southern Africa

Delegates at a workshop in Pretoria voice the challenges and opportunites for small-scale livestock farmers in southern Africa. How can southern Africa benefit from the global ‘livestock revolution’? What options exist for trade given changes in market demand, entry requirements and trade preferences? What veterinary and food safety standards are required for different trade options? What does this imply for disease control and management of transboundary diseases such as foot and mouth? Who are the winners and losers of different scenarios for the future?

Farmer First Revisited

In 1987 a meeting of 50 social and natural scientists proved a defining moment in the development of farmer participation in agricultural research. In December 2007, the Future Agricultures Consortium in association STEPS and IDS hosted an international workshop, Farmer First Revisited, to coincide with the 20th anniversary. Robert Chambers, who organised the original event, talks here about importance of the farmer first approach. There are video interviews of many other participants.
